“She’s female, currently malnourished, and very unhappy with us,” Larimar reported to Nia and Peach. “She won’t tell me her name or speak at all.”

“Can she speak?” Peach asked.

They were currently standing outside the medical bay where Ten was receiving treatment for his broken arm, and their young captive had been placed in an observation bay while Larimar assessed her.

“I don’t know yet,” Larimar said. “If she’s been by herself for any length of time, she might just have gotten out of the way of doing it.”

“She can thinkspeak though,” Nia said. Both Peach and Larimar turned to look at her. “What? Can’t you feel her? She’s giving me a headache.”

“That’s… weird,” Peach said. “I can’t sense anything.”

“It’s probably because my shields aren’t great,” Nia said.

“Your shields are excellent.” Larimar was still staring at her. “It’s your communication skills that need refining.” She paused. “If you can sense her, will you try and get her to communicate with you?”

“If you think it’s safe.” Nia waited for Peach’s nod of agreement. “I need to check in on Ten anyway.”

“He’ll be fine. It was a nice, clean break which will mend quite easily.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” Nia said as she followed Larimar into the med lab where she had already spent way too much of her time since their journey commenced. “He hates being incapacitated.”

“I know.” Larimar chuckled as she waved Nia toward Ten’s bed. “He’s already asking to be set free. I told him he has to wait until morning.”

Nia was already aware that Ten was fighting sleep waiting to see her and went to take hold of his uninjured hand.

His fingers closed around hers. “About time, too.”

“Larimar says you’re going to be okay.”

“I knew that. I’m still breathing,” Ten murmured as he sank back against the pillow. “Is the kid all right?”

“Apparently.” Nia smoothed the black hair away from his forehead. “I’m going to check on them after you’ve gone to sleep.”

“I don’t need—”

She pressed a kiss to his mouth. “Yes, you do. I want you up and ready to fight tomorrow.”

He grunted something unintelligible as his eyes closed and his grip on her hand loosened. She kissed him again and gently stepped back, her gaze scanning his powerful body concealed under the pristine white sheets. He had an incredibly strong constitution, and he healed fast. He would probably insist on being back at his post tomorrow, whether Larimar liked it or not.

“He’s out.” Nia turned to Larimar. “At least for now.”

Her companion gestured at the tube inserted in Ten’s vein. “He’ll be out all night, if I have anything to do with it. It’s the only way I can keep him still enough to heal.”

“I hear you.” Nia sighed. “I hate seeing him down though.”

“Of course, you do. He’s your bonded mate.” Larimar patted her shoulder. “Now, do you have time to come and see the child? Or would you rather wait until tomorrow?”

“I’ll come now. It will give me something to think about while Ten’s asleep.” Nia
